Makeup in Media

This task involves me choosing five examples of makeup I like in Film or TV.

At the moment I am currently obsessed with a show called RuPaul's Drag Race

I searched for RuPaul's Makeup artist and came across a man named Mathu Andersen, who is extremely creative himself. He has an instagram which people in the thousands follow.

Here are some examples of Mathu's work;

He has been referred to on occassion as the "bearded lady" due to his feminine makeup and features teamed with a beard. On the left is a candyfloss pink look.

The picture on the right shows a darker and more macabre side to his work. The contrasting images of his work show that he has diversity and talent in his field.

My second inspirational makeup would be from the movie, Burlesque. It features two musicians I like, Cher and Christina Aguilera. The makeup in the movie is flawless and beautiful, taking inspiration from the 50's and the Burlesque movement.

The makeup artist for Christina Aguilera was Kristofer Buckle. A famous artist to the stars such as Demi Moore, Gwenyth Paltrow and many others. His work has also been featured on the front page of many high end fashion magazines.

On the left is Christina Aguilera in the movie, Burlesque. Kristofer was her main makeup artist and designer.

Christina models another look by Kristofer.

Third is one of my favourite movies ever, The Rocky Horror Picture Show. It stars Tim Curry as the enigmatic 'Dr Frank N. Furter', a transvestite from Transexual Transylvania.

Here we have the amazing Dr Frank N Furter. The makeup is inspired by typical Drag makeup at the time, with some horror elements. The makeup in this film has become iconic with it's dark sultry style.

On the right are the characters, from left, Magenta, Dr Frank N Furter and Colombia. The makeup style of the film was heavy and exaggerated dark eyes and bold red lips paired with striking contouring.

Fourth is Silent Hill. A movie adaptation of the game by Konami, also named Silent Hill. It's one of my favourite psychological horror movies due to it's frighteningly creative creature design.

On the left is Pyramid head or known as "Red Pyramid" from the film. He is a favourite design of mine as he is a demon who represents one of the main characters hate. He is a massive bulking creature who drags an equally massive sword/knife behind him, creating a terrifying metal upon metal noise as he approaches.

On the right are the Silent Hill nurses. They are usually found in groups and remain stationary until they are triggered by noise or light. Whenever they are triggered they move with a creepy disjointed walk. A lot of people cosplay as these nurses as they are just so creepy and well designed.

Lastly is the cult Sci-Fi film, The Fifth Element. The movie has an all star cast including Bruce Willis, Milla Jovovich and Gary Oldman. I personally love this movie for it's rich environment and also for its compelling storyline and characters. The makeup artist for the movie was Lois Burwell, an Academy award winning artist for Braveheart. She has also worked on other movies such as Saving Private Ryan and War of the Worlds.

The woman on the left, Diva Plavalaguna, has in my opinion, the best SFX makeup in the whole movie. She is eerily elegant and beautiful while on the stage.

On the right is Chris Tucker playing the character Ruby Rhod, an infuriating but loveable sidekick to Bruce Willis' character. He changes costume and makeup a few times during the duration of the movie, each look flamboyant and loud like the characters personality.

Thanks for reading!
